The Engineering Division of the Development Services Department is responsible for the review of transportation engineering, drainage, and proposed public improvements related to land development applications.  Engineering staff provide advice to County Boards and Commissions on technical engineering matters, and facilitate approval of technical plans and designs for transportation and drainage facilities (infrastructure).

Engineering issues are related to impacts that development has on the people who live, work and visit in the County.  Generally, land development results in impacts to transportation systems due to additional traffic generated by the development, and impacts to drainage systems due to an increase in hard surfaced (impervious) areas.

Transportation Engineering issues include analysis of impacts to the County’s transportation systems (primarily roads), acquisition of land for public roads through subdivision applications (right-of-way dedication), determination of access locations from private lots to public roads, and design of streets - including signals, signs, striping, sidewalks, road drainage and protection from hazards.

Drainage engineering issues include analysis of impacts to waterways resulting from additional impervious areas, grading plans (earth-moving / changing the existing shape of the land), erosion control and protection of water quality, and design of drainage facilities - storm sewers, culverts, bridges, ditches, detention ponds and bank protection for channels (creeks and streams).

The Engineering Division includes Inspection staff who are responsible for inspection of development-related construction activities, and procedures related to County acceptance of new public works.
